Democrats Finally Stop Bringing Spoons to a Knife Fight
An Essay from Patti Vasquez
Hi Folks,
This Mocha Monday, Patti Vasquez is here with a fiery take on something we’ve been waiting decades to see: Democrats finally showing up to a political knife fight with more than a spoon.
Patti breaks down how state and national Democratic leaders are responding to an all-out Republican push to gerrymander their way to permanent power. From Texas lawmakers fleeing the state to block Trump’s map grab, to Gavin Newsom and JB Pritzker signaling they’re ready to fight fire with fire, she lays out why this shift matters—and why it’s long overdue.
Patti’s voice is bold, sharp, and exactly what the moment demands.
We support fearless progressive voices like Patti’s through sales of our WOKE Nitro-Infused Sweet Cream Latte and monthly coffee subscriptions. For the next three days, a portion of every purchase will go directly toward amplifying this kind of truth-telling and independent commentary.

Democrats Finally Stop Bringing Spoons to a Knife Fight
For twenty five years, I've watched Democrats show up to political battles like they're attending a dinner party, preoccupied with proper etiquette while Republicans are throwing chairs and breaking windows.
This week, that finally changed.
As Texas House Democrats fled their own state to prevent Trump from stealing five congressional seats, as California's Gavin Newsom announced plans to redraw their maps in retaliation, as Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (I do love our governor) opened his arms to Democratic refugees from Texas, I realized we're witnessing something unprecedented: Democrats are finally fighting fire with fire.
Republicans are stealing the voice and rights of Americans everywhere. While we're all talking about Texas, it's happening in Missouri, Indiana, and Florida too. But for the first time in decades, Democrats aren't just wringing their hands and hoping voters will remember this betrayal in two years. They're fighting back.
And it's about damn time.
Here's what I've watched for twenty years of political comedy: Republicans break every norm, violate every tradition, and abandon every principle that makes democracy function. Then Democrats respond by... giving thoughtful speeches about the importance of institutions.
It's been like watching someone get punched in the face repeatedly while they lecture their attacker about proper debate etiquette.
In Missouri, the Senate President has announced a special session is "likely" to redraw their congressional map. Not because of new census data (or the end of a decade for that matter), but because Trump's White House is personally pressuring Missouri Republicans to steal Emanuel Cleaver's Kansas City seat. These are the same Missouri Republicans who just overturned voter approved reproductive rights protections and repealed the mandatory paid sick leave that Missourians voted for in Proposition A.
Meanwhile, JD Vance flew to Indiana this week (after having river waters in Ohio raised so he could kayak for his birthday—ya know, like ya do) to pressure Governor Braun into redistricting because apparently having 7 out of 9 congressional seats isn't enough for these power hungry authoritarians.
And now Florida's Ron DeSantis has joined the party, announcing it "would be appropriate to do a redistricting in the mid decade" and forming a special committee to explore redrawing their maps. This is the same DeSantis who already eliminated Black representation in North Florida with his 2022 gerrymander, giving Republicans a 20-8 advantage despite the state being far more competitive.
Quite the pattern they've got going on there. Missouri voters approve abortion rights, so Republicans overturn it. Missouri voters approve paid sick leave, and Republicans kill it. Now they want to gerrymander away their voices in Congress entirely. Florida voters pass Fair Districts amendments to prevent gerrymandering, so DeSantis ignores them and eliminates Black representation. Texas voters elect Democrats, so Trump demands they redraw the maps to make those votes meaningless.
This is authoritarianism with a bullhorn and charming accents.
And the Democratic response for years? "We believe in independent redistricting commissions." "We support fair maps." "We must preserve democratic norms."
Yeah, how's that working out?
As a kid, I learned the hard way that bullies don't stop because you ask nicely. They stop when the cost of continuing becomes too high. They stop when you run right at them and say "You wanna fight? Fine. Let's do this!" (Believe me, I was just as surprised as one of my bullies when I let loose all the fury I had pent up for years. I was equally surprised that it worked.)
For too long, Democrats have been showing up to a Chicago street fight wearing their Sunday best and wondering why they keep getting their asses kicked.
But something fundamental shifted this week. When those 51 Texas House Democrats came to Illinois (and New York and Boston), they weren't following some parliamentary procedure they learned in civics class. They were using the only tool they had left to prevent election theft.
JB Pritzker welcomed them with open arms, declaring that "everything has to be on the table," sending a clear message that we are done with the traditional Democratic playbook responses.
Republicans have been accusing Democrats of gerrymandering for years while systematically rigging elections in every state they control.
Let's check the actual facts, shall we?
Twenty-one states now use nonpartisan or bipartisan redistricting commissions. Guess which states pushed for those reforms? Democratic states. California has an independent redistricting commission that Governor Newsom would have to override to retaliate against Texas. When Democrats tried to pass the Freedom to Vote Act—which would have banned partisan gerrymandering nationwide and required independent commissions—Republicans filibustered it.
The Supreme Court's 5-4 decision in Rucho v. Common Cause essentially told Republicans they have a green light to rig elections with zero consequences. Chief Justice Roberts said partisan gerrymandering might be "incompatible with democratic principles," but federal courts can't do anything about it.
He may as well have said, "Cheat all you want, boys. We have your back."
So when Republicans accuse Democrats of gerrymandering while coordinating a national coup against fair districts, they've gone way past hypocrisy. They're gaslighting at an epic scale.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers put it bluntly: "When you have a gun against your head, you've got to do something."
This is the calculation Democrats are finally making: Play by the rules while Republicans cheat, and lose everything. Fight back with the same tactics, and maybe save democracy by temporarily abandoning some democratic principles.
It's an impossible choice, and it's exactly what Trump wants. He doesn't just break the rules. He forces everyone else to break them too. He makes corruption look like the only rational response to corruption. He turns defending democracy into an argument for abandoning democratic principles.
California could flip five Republican seats if voters approve Newsom's ballot initiative in November. Illinois already has maps that favor Democrats and could go further. New York is exploring constitutional changes that would allow mid decade redistricting in response to other states.
I've performed comedy in red states where audiences cheered jokes about "Chicago corruption" while their own politicians were selling Senate seats to the highest bidder. There's something deeply satisfying about watching those same people clutch their pearls when Democrats finally decide to use the same tactics Republicans have been using for years.
"This is unprecedented!" they cry, apparently suffering from selective amnesia about their own party's decade long gerrymandering spree.
"This undermines democracy!" they wail, apparently forgetting that their guy is trying to steal House seats from Texas while pressuring Missouri, Indiana, and Florida to follow suit.
American democracy has been under attack for years. What's unprecedented isn't Democrats fighting back—it's Democrats finally recognizing that "when they go low, we go high" doesn't work when "they" are bringing dynamite to the moral high ground. We have to go zero fucks given. We have to go scorched earth.
I hope Democrats get so good at this game that Republicans suddenly discover a passion for fair redistricting and independent commissions. Nothing converts a cheater to reform faster than losing at their own game.
But I am concerned that we're watching the wholesale collapse of any shared commitment to democratic norms, and once that's gone, it might be nearly impossible to rebuild.
If we don't flip the table and show we refuse to go down without a fight, we allow democracy to be threatened everywhere.
The Texas Democrats hiding in Illinois didn't want to flee their state. They wanted to do their jobs, represent their constituents, and follow the rules. But Trump made that impossible. He turned governing into a hostage situation where the only choice was collaboration or exile.
This is America in 2025: lawmakers hiding to prevent election theft, the Attorney General threatening to hunt down elected officials, the President's personal lawyer deciding who gets prosecuted. We're not sliding toward authoritarianism. We're fighting our way out of it.
And finally, FINALLY, Democrats are bringing the right weapons to the fight. It's not going to win the war, but it's a start.

The Republican states have already gerrymandered their states to the max. They don't have as many "opportunities" as Democrat states do. Also, don't assume that we can't win in Republican gerrymandered states.
