Dear Conservatives: Trump Is Betraying Everything You Stand For
An Essay from Patti Vasquez
Hi Folks,
This Mocha Monday, Patti Vasquez is back—and this time she’s taking direct aim at conservatives who claim to care about fiscal responsibility, American strength, and protecting children, while cheering on Trump as he betrays every one of those principles.
Patti’s column pulls no punches. From Trump wasting billions on ICE raids that terrorize farmworkers and caregivers, to rolling out the red carpet for Vladimir Putin while he kidnaps Ukrainian children, she lays bare the hypocrisy at the heart of MAGA’s so-called “conservatism.” If you’ve ever wondered what happened to the party that once railed against government waste, foreign dictators, and federal overreach, Patti has the answer: they sold their values for cheap political theater.
Her voice is sharp, bold, and exactly what this moment demands.
We support fearless progressive voices like Patti’s through sales of our WOKE Nitro-Infused Sweet Cream Latte and monthly coffee subscriptions. For the next three days, a portion of every purchase will go directly toward amplifying this kind of truth-telling and independent commentary.
And now, here’s Patti….

Dear Conservatives: Trump Is Betraying Everything You Stand For
Look, I get it. You voted for Trump because you believe in fiscal responsibility. You believe in American strength against foreign threats like Russia. You believe in protecting children and supporting our farmers. You wanted someone who would go after actual criminals, not waste taxpayer money chasing hardworking people.
At least that's what so many of you said.
Was that really true?
Because the Trump we're watching isn't delivering on any of those promises. He's doing the exact opposite of everything real conservatives stand for.
Remember when conservatives cared about government waste and bloated budgets? Trump just got Congress to approve $185 billion for immigration enforcement over four years. That's more than the entire annual budget for the Department of Homeland Security. This gives immigration enforcement 80 times more funding than labor standards enforcement.
Think about that.
Eighty times more money to chase people who are laboring to take care of themselves and their families than to go after employers who actually break the law.
And what are we getting for this astronomical spending? ICE is already $1 billion over budget with three months left in the fiscal year, and they're nowhere near Trump's goal of 3,000 arrests per day. The bill allocates $45 billion just for detention centers – making ICE's annual detention budget nearly 50% larger than the entire federal prison system. We're building immigrant gulags that cost more than housing actual criminals.
And we can all see with our own eyes every single day that they're not even going after criminals. They're going after farmers' workers, day laborers, caregivers, students, mothers, fathers, grandparents, and children.
"He said that he was going to deport criminals. And let me tell you where you find the criminals: in prisons," says Teresa Romero, president of United Farm Workers. "He's not deporting criminals. He's deporting hardworking farm workers."
But it's not just farm workers. ICE is conducting raids at restaurants, construction sites, and hotels. They're arresting honor students at high schools, caregivers at senior centers, and construction workers who are actually U.S. citizens. About 42% of U.S. farm workers are undocumented, but the dragnet includes gardeners, nannies, restaurant workers, janitors – basically anyone working without the right paperwork, regardless of how long they've been contributing to their communities.
Conservatives don't want to admit (or perhaps believe) that undocumented immigrants actually have far lower crime rates than the general population. But Trump would rather spend billions targeting people whose biggest crime is working without papers than hold convicted criminals accountable – while he's busy pardoning grifters, corrupt officials, and violent criminals alike.
Meanwhile, Trump keeps waffling. One day he says certain industries will be protected, the next day he reverses course and orders raids to continue. He talks about letting farmers "take responsibility" for longtime workers, but his agents keep showing up with handcuffs instead of solutions.
And while he's spending billions chasing laborers and students, he's pardoning actual convicted felons. Make that make sense.
Remember when Republicans understood that Russia was America's enemy? When the GOP stood for strength against foreign threats?
Vladimir Putin has an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for kidnapping Ukrainian children. Over 16,000 Ukrainian children have been forcibly deported to Russia. This is the guy who runs the global child trafficking operation that conservatives claim to care about.
So what did Trump do? He rolled out the red carpet in Alaska, gave Putin a military flyover welcome, and got absolutely nothing in return. No ceasefire. No commitment to stop bombing civilians. Putin wouldn't even answer basic questions about ending the war.
Even as the two presidents were greeting each other, alerts went out in Ukraine about incoming Russian drones and aircraft. Putin was literally bombing children while Trump was shaking his hand for the cameras.
What did Putin get? Everything. International legitimacy after years of being a pariah. A photo op with the President of the United States. And when it ended, Putin suggested their next meeting should be "in Moscow" – basically telling Trump to come kiss the ring on Russian soil.
What did America get? Trump admitted, "I thought this would be the easiest of them all, and it was the most difficult." Now he's putting pressure on Ukraine to "get it done" instead of holding Russia accountable.
And speaking of government overreach – remember when conservatives opposed federal agents policing local communities? When you believed in states' rights and local control?
Trump just deployed 450 federal agents to police Washington D.C. against the mayor's wishes, while threatening to "federalize" the city entirely. He's ordering homeless people to move out "IMMEDIATELY" and relocating them "FAR from the Capital." His Attorney General is threatening to "hunt down" and arrest anyone who opposes him.
This is the federal takeover of local government that conservatives used to scream about. But now it's happening under a Republican president, and where's the outrage? Where are the states' rights advocates?
Meanwhile, he's deploying California's National Guard into Los Angeles for immigration raids, despite objections from local leaders. Federal agents are conducting sweeps in restaurants with flash bangs, violently arresting people on camera. One ICE agent was even caught on video saying "liberals ruined this country" while violently arresting a delivery worker.
Oh wait, I forgot – you only oppose federal overreach when it might affect you. When federal agents are targeting people you don't like, suddenly militarized enforcement is just fine.
So the party that spent decades talking about fiscal responsibility just approved the biggest law enforcement budget in American history to chase people who cook your food, build your houses, and care for your elderly parents. The party that built its foreign policy on standing up to Russia is now making excuses for a child trafficker who played Trump like a fiddle. The party that opposed federal overreach is cheering as Trump militarizes American cities.
Undocumented immigrants actually have far lower crime rates than the general population. Economists estimate this mass deportation could cost trillions and contract the entire economy. But hey, at least we'll have the most expensive law enforcement operation in history to show for it.
And on Russia? The country that interfered in our elections, that commits war crimes daily, that kidnaps children – Trump treats Putin better than he treats American workers. He gives a war criminal the pomp and ceremony of a state visit while threatening people whose biggest crime is cleaning office buildings and picking strawberries.
This isn't conservative. This isn't fiscally responsible. This isn't putting America first. This is government waste on a massive scale combined with foreign policy weakness – exactly what you've always accused liberals of. It's pure projection, and you're cheering it on.
How can MAGA not see what happened in Alaska? Putin is wanted by the International Criminal Court for "the war crime of unlawful deportation of population and that of unlawful transfer of population from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation." We're talking about children here. Ukrainian officials are investigating more than 16,000 forced deportations of minors.
This is the global child trafficking operation that conservatives are constantly accusing everyone else of running. Putin is literally stealing children from their families and shipping them thousands of miles away to be adopted by Russian families. Some Ukrainian kids have been sent to live in institutions and with foster families in 19 different Russian regions, including Siberia and the Arctic.
And what's the "protect the children" party's response? Applauding Trump for treating the child trafficker with respect and dignity while he continues his crimes against children.
Meanwhile, Trump's spending $45 billion to build detention centers for people who've been working in America for decades. People whose biggest crime is washing dishes, caring for elderly Americans, or building the houses conservatives live in.
If you're a real conservative, this should make you furious. But maybe the inhumane and dangerous policies harming human beings don't alarm you the way they do the rest of us. Maybe you're just enjoying what you consider liberal "whining" and "crying."
Fine. But surely your tax dollars being wasted on an unprecedented scale should bother you? Your president is weak against America's enemies. Your party's principles are being sold out for photo ops and political theater.
Trump promised to drain the swamp and you chanted along. Instead, he's funding the biggest government boondoggle in history while kowtowing to foreign dictators. He promised to go after criminals. Instead, he's going after people who work for a living while pardoning actual convicts.
And your only satisfaction is owning the libs. That's a pretty steep price you're paying just to brag about something that isn't even bringing down the cost of living.
Real conservatives deserve leaders who keep their promises, spend money wisely, and stand up to America's enemies. Trump is doing none of that. He's betraying everything you claim to believe in.
So MAGA, are you going to keep making excuses for him, or are you going to demand leaders who actually represent conservative values?
I'm not holding my breath. From the looks of things, you're willing to sell your souls just to "own" the very people who are actually fighting for the rights and freedoms you claim to care about.

Patty:
I appreciate today's essay but I think you’re picking the wrong target. Trying to appeal to Trump voters is a Labor of Sisyphus. The Trump faithful, regardless of whatever justifications they offer for their perfidy, are beyond hope. At least not in sufficient enough numbers to make a difference. A better strategy is to target your local Democrats. Don’t send the Democratic Party a penny. Instead give it to the most progressive candidates out there. At the same time make sure the Party understands that until they tow the line by getting off their asses and going after every Republican all at every juncture and doing so all the time., while send ever corporate Democratic liberal lickspittle packing, you won’t vote Democratic at all. It sounds harsh, but over time it has become clear this is the only thing that might get the Democratic Party’s attention.
Great essay.
